ORLANDO - The UCF Women's Golf team is set to compete in the Conference USA Championship in Birmingham, Ala., next week. The three-day tournament will consist of eight league schools, vying for the title and an automatic NCAA Regional berth. The championship will be held in Birmingham, Ala., from April 23-25, at the Limestone Springs Golf Course (par 72, 6,987 yards).
The Knights finished in a tie for third at last year's championship - their first in the league. East Carolina won the title in 2006 by 10 strokes. SMU enters the championship as the top-ranked league school in the latest Golfstat rankings at No. 41. UCF is second among C-USA teams at No. 68. Memphis is No. 69, East Carolina is No. 72, UTEP is No. 80 and Tulsa is No. 87, while UAB (142) and Marshall (144) round out the rankings.
UCF is entering the competition coming off of a tie for 3rd at the Florida State Championship held in Miami, March 30-April 1.
"I know that we are ready to get back into competition and face the challenge of going up against the rest of the league," head coach Emilee Klein said. "The girls have had a few weeks off and have really been practicing well, so it should be an exciting tournament in Birmingham."
The line-up for this year's tournament will be comprised of sophomore Stephanie Connelly, freshman Sara Hurwitch, freshman Victoria Tomko, sophomore Mayule Tomimbang and junior Annabel Silk. Of the five Knights, only Silk has C-USA Championship experience after she tied for 20th in the 2006 event.
The winner of the tournament receives an automatic berth into the NCAA East Regional, which will take place May 10-12 in Baton Rouge, La.
