MIAMI, Fla. (www.UCFAthletics.com) - UCF freshman LaKendra Thames shattered the school record and qualified for the NCAA Regional in the discus to lead the Knights at the Miami Elite Invitational on Saturday.
Thames, who broke the UCF freshman records in the shot put, discus and weight throw earlier in the season, took second place in the discus with a throw of 160-feet, three inches. The previous mark of 153-8 was set by Tiffany Roebuck in 2004.
Another freshman Jessica Francis (Orlando, Fla./Boone HS) established a personal best of 146-9 as she claimed seventh in the discus.
In the pole vault, senior Katie Fowke (Tampa, Fla./Riverview HS) matched her season-best mark of 11-11.75 for second place, while junior Kelsey Bealert (Orlando, Fla./Oak Ridge HS) was third at 10-11.75. Sophomore Dione Thomas (Jacksonville, Fla./Raines HS) took fourth in the long jump and was sixth in the triple jump.
After a two-year hiatus from the 100-meter hurdles, junior Victoria Chin (Orlando, Fla./Oak Ridge HS) ran the event in 14.60 to finish ninth followed by junior Tia Harewood (Wyandach, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East HS) in tenth at 14.71.
Freshman Feyisara Adaramola (Bronx, N.Y./Trevor Day School) made her outdoor debut in the 200m, finishing in 24.57, while junior Sadé Nero (Miami, Fla./Miami Northwestern HS) went 57.50 in the 400m. In the 800m, sophomore Shantile Blackburn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Laughlin HS) recorded a personal-best time of 2:12.96 for sixth place and freshman Carley Dart (Windsor, Ontario) was 11th at 2:19.51.
The Knights were also scheduled to compete in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. but inclimate weather forced the cancellation of the meet.
