UCF Rowing to Host Petrakis Cup Saturday at Lake Pickett

March 23, 2007

Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF rowing heads back into action this weekend when it hosts the Petrakis Cup Saturday at Lake Pickett. The Golden Knights will be taking on Jacksonville, Tulane, Embry-Riddle and Miami (Fla.) in hopes of claiming top honors for the third year running. This weekend marks the first time this season the open, lightweight and novice squads will be competing in the same regatta.

The Petrakis Cup is an annual race between Jacksonville University and UCF, and for the second year in a row Embry-Riddle and Tulane also will be competing. First year Petrakis Cup competitor Miami (Fla.) will round out the field. UCF will be represented by its women's rowing squad and the men's rowing club team. Embry-Riddle, Tulane and Jacksonville will have both their men's and women's squads competing while Miami (Fla.) will just have a women's squad competing.

There are three awards up-for-grabs in this weekend's competition: the Mary B. Petrakis Cup goes to the winner of the women's races, a second award goes to the winner of the men's races and the final award, the Petrakis Cup, is handed out to the overall points winner of both the men's and women's races.

The Petrakis Cup is hosted by John Petrakis, an alumnus of the Jacksonville University rowing squad. Since 1992, he has sponsored the race between UCF and Jacksonville and he is a strong supporter of Golden Knights athletics.

UCF is coming off a strong showing last weekend in both the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, and the Rollins Tri-Meet in Winter Park, Fla. The Knights were able to defeat Iowa March 16 and Kansas State in the morning March 17 in convincing fashion. That afternoon consisted of UCF sweeping Duke in all three races. The Golden Knights were able to finish the week March 18 with another sweep, this time defeating Texas in four-straight races. UCF also was successful during the weekend in Winter Park, Fla., finishing all five races in the top three spots.

Saturday's regattas begin at 8 a.m. with the men's varsity eight race. UCF will enter both its open and lightweight boats into the women's varsity eight race which is set to start at 8:15 a.m. The next race for the Golden Knights will be the second women's varsity eight race at 8:45 a.m., and then the women's novice eight race at 9:15 a.m. The women's varsity four race will be at 9:45 a.m. and the women's lightweight four race is set for 10:15 a.m. The day will finish at 10:45 with the women's novice four race.

The next competition for the Golden Knights will be another split weekend between the open and lightweight squads. The open squad will be racing April 7 in Charlottesville, Va., versus the University of Virginia, Duke and Michigan State. The lightweight squad will be racing on April 7 as well, taking on Princeton, Harvard and MIT in Princeton, N.J.
