ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Kirk Speraw added another honor to his list of 2006-07 accomplishments when CollegeInsider.com recently named him its Conference USA Coach of the Year. UCF's head coach earned the league's coach of the year honor on March 7 at the C-USA Championship in Memphis, Tenn.
Speraw guided the Golden Knights to a 22-9 overall record this past season. In only its second campaign in C-USA, UCF finished second in the 12-team conference with an 11-5 mark.
UCF was selected seventh in the league's preseason poll in November. Speraw's team was one of the most improved squads in the nation in 2006-07. The previous year, UCF went 14-15 overall and 7-7 in league action.
This season, the Golden Knights went 15-1 at home and began the campaign 6-0 for the first time since UCF joined the Division I ranks prior to the 1984-85 season. The Golden Knights did not lose back-to-back games in 2006-07, going 8-0 after a loss.
In his 14th year at the school, Speraw has led UCF to 106 victories dating back to the start of the 2002-03 season. UCF has averaged 21 victories over the last five years. Since leaving the Atlantic Sun Conference for C-USA prior to last year, the Golden Knights have posted 18 league victories, the most of the six programs that joined the conference with UCF.
The CollgeInsider.com award is the second for Speraw. He garnered the web site's A-Sun award after the 2003-04 campaign.
