ORLANDO - Junior goalkeeper Jennifer Manis (Pensacola, Fla./Washington HS) made five saves as host UCF shut down UAB, 2-0, in Conference USA women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon.
The win moved the Golden Knights to 7-5-1 overall and 3-1-0 in league play, while UAB fell to 5-7-0 and 3-1-0 in conference.
The Golden Knights dominated the opening minutes of the match. Sophomore Hanna Wilde scored first on a long shot from 40 yards that sailed over Blazer goalkeeper Julie McFarlane (five saves) in the 26th minute.
UCF had two solid opportunities to add some insurance in the final 10 minutes of the first half. In the 36th minute, freshman Yvonne George's header was just high of the net, while Wilde's shot in the 40th minute hit the crossbar.
It was senior Roberta Pelarigo that gave the Golden Knights' the 2-0 lead when she capitalized on a penalty kick in the 50th minute.
UAB's best chance to score came in the 87th minute on a corner kick. With traffic in the box, Manis made the save on freshman Danya Barsalona's shot to preserve her fourth shutout of the season.
UCF outshot UAB by a 17-11 margin on the afternoon.
The Golden Knights begin a three-game road swing when they travel to East Carolina on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
