ORLANDO - Sophomore Zak Boggs (Vienna, W.Va./The Pendleton School) scored his third goal of the season as UCF blanked No. 17 Memphis, 1-0, in Conference USA men's soccer action at the UCF Soccer Complex on Wednesday night.

With the win - the team's first over a ranked opponent since 2004, the Golden Knights improved to 3-6-0 overall and 1-1-0 in C-USA. The Tigers dropped to 8-3-0, 1-2-0 C-USA.

"The win tonight was huge for us," said UCF head coach Brent Erwin. "As we were scouting Memphis this week, I felt they were one of the better teams that we have faced all year. After playing them, I believe it. This was a true team effort. Everyone came to play and contributed to the victory."

Boggs gave UCF the only goal it needed in the 29th minute as he streaked in on the right side and shot a bullet from 12 yards that found the back of the net. It was Boggs' third goal in four matches.

In the 59th minute, the Golden Knights had a chance to add some insurance when sophomore Mike Mattson (Boca Raton, Fla./Pope John Paul II HS) sent a pass across the goal mouth to Boggs, who was streaking toward the far post. The connection was broken up the Tigers.

Memphis' best opportunity came on a free kick in the 66th minute, but junior Kevin Walsh struck the ball high over the crossbar.

The Golden Knights finished the night with a slight 14-13 advantage in shots. UCF sophomore keeper Marcus Rein (Scotts Valley, Calif./Edison Academic Center) made five saves en route to his third shutout of the season, while the Tigers' Tyler Strom had three.

UCF returns to action when it plays host to league foe UAB on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
