WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Five different players scored as the No. 18 Wake Forest men's soccer team defeated UCF, 5-0, in the first round of the Wake Forest Invitational at Spry Stadium on Friday night. It was the season opener for both squads.

"Tonight was a good lesson on how top team's play," said UCF head coach Brent Erwin. "We aspire to become a national power. By playing a team like Wake Forest that is well-coached and perennial NCAA Tournament participant, we can see what it takes to get to that level."

Opening up the scoring with a goal by junior Julian Valentin in the 11th minute, the Demon Deacons continued to push the ball throughout the match until freshman Erik Hummel netted the final tally in the 86th minute.

WFU senior Steve Curfman assisted on three of the goals. Junior goalkeeper Brian Edwards made one save for the Demon Deacons, while UCF sophomore Marcus Rein, a transfer from Wake Forest in December 2005, stopped four shots.

"We'll take a lot from this match, built from here and become a better team," said Erwin.

The Golden Knights continue play at the Wake Forest Invitational against No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday at noon.
