UCF Spring Football Practice Report No. 11 - Scrimmage No. 2

April 8, 2006

ORLANDO - After yielding eight touchdowns in the first scrimmage of the spring, the UCF defense played well and held the offense to just two touchdowns during the second officiated scrimmage of the spring for the Golden Knights Saturday morning inside the Nicholson Fieldhouse. With several former players in attendance for lettermen's weekend, the former Golden Knights got a chance to see a defense that delivered several big hits and controlled the scrimmage.

"It was a good scrimmage," stated UCF head coach George O'Leary. "There was a good contact level and some of the players are really starting to perform."

One position O'Leary would like to see more productivity is from the wide receivers. "I would like to see some of the wide receivers step up and catch the ball in traffic," added O'Leary. "We dropped way too many balls today."

Senior quarterback Steven Moffett finished 7-of-13 passing for 62 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Moffett found redshirt freshman running back Shane Smith out of the backfield for a three-yard score.

Smith got the bulk of the carries with the second team offense. He finished with 12 carries for 42 yards.

Sophomore tailback Kevin Smith scored UCF's other offensive touchdown with a 14-yard scamper. Smith ended the day with 47 yards on 11 carries.

Junior safety Renford Parkes delivered the hit of the scrimmage with a big, open-field shot on Smith. The hit caused Smith to fumble, which the defense recovered.

Junior place-kicker Michael Torres made a 42-yard field goal and missed from 44 yards. Junior place-kicker Nick Beucher drilled a 45-yard field goal for the second team offense.

Senior cornerback Travonti Johnson recorded his second interception in as many scrimmages for the Golden Knight defense. Senior linebacker Ronnell Sandy and redshirt sophomore safety Jason Venson also had would-be interceptions fall through their hands.

UCF begins its final week of spring drills Tuesday morning with practice from 9:20-11:20 a.m.

Scrimmage Notes: Sophomore linebacker Cory Hogue picked off one pass for the first team defense ... junior defensive tackle Leger Douzable made several terrific plays behind the line of scrimmage, including two tackles-for-loss on the opening series.
