Sonny Nimkhum and Greg Forest each shot 1-under-par 71s in the first round of the Thunderbird Invitational Saturday at Karsten Golf Course as UCF shot a 3-over-par 291 as a team and found itself in 12th after the opening round.

San Diego State jumped out to the early lead with an 11-under-par 277, which was one-stroke better than defending champion Arizona and two better than UNLV. Arizona's Henry Liaw opened with a 6-under-par 66 and built a one-stroke advantage over four golfers tied for second.

Nimkhum and Forest were tied for 24th after the first round, while Stefan Wistorf found himself tied for 54th after an opening 2-over-par 74. Kyle Davis and Giwon Suh opened with 3-over-par 75s which were good enough for a tie for 63rd.
