HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Freshman first baseman Breanne Javier was 2-for-3 at the plate as UCF fell to Southern Miss in Conference USA softball action Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
The Golden Eagles improved to 23-23 on the season and 7-2 in C-USA, while the Golden Knights dropped to 13-26 and 0-12.
Allison Kime (9-11) pitched six innings for UCF, giving up two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Lacey Gros went the distance for USM, giving up one run on three hits with three strikeouts.
The Golden Knights took their first lead of the series in the first inning off of four walks issued by Southern Miss. A base running error ended UCF's threat with bases loaded.
The Golden Knights turned their first 6-4-3 double play of the season in the bottom of the third to stop Southern Miss. Ashley Brenan hit a ground ball to Amber Lamb who flipped it to Jennifer Tomasetti to get Charity Butler out and then fired a shot to Javier for the final out of the inning.
Southern Miss came alive in the sixth inning, scoring two runs to pull ahead, 2-1. Butler led off the inning with a single to center field and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brenan. The Golden Knights intentionally walked Jennifer Huerta to have a force play at any bag. Jennifer Fox stepped to the plate and hit blop single to shallow center field, just out of the reach of a diving Kacie Feaster to score Butler from second for the first run. Huerta got caught in a rundown on a play between second and third but made it back to second safely only for Fox to be tagged out because she too was at second. Ashley Davis singled to left field, scoring Huerta from second for the second Golden Eagles' run of the inning.
The Golden Knights travel to Birmingham, Ala. next weekend to take on UAB in a three-game series. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. ET both days.
