HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Brittany Walters was 2-for-3 at the plate with two walks and one hit by pitch as the UCF softball team fell to Southern Miss 7-2 and 6-2 Saturday afternoon at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. The Golden Eagles improved to 20-23 on the season and 6-2 in Conference USA, while the Golden Knights fell to 13-25 and 0-11.
Game One:
Southern Miss jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first when Ashley Brenan sent a bullet over the fence in left field for two runs. On a squeeze bunt gone awry, the Golden Eagles scored their third run of the inning as the ball was thrown into center field.
USM added a fourth run in the second as Jessica Huerta doubled down the left field line, scoring Charity Butler from third.
UCF began to chip away at Southern Miss' lead in the third inning, plating one run. Kacie Feaster picked up her 20th RBI of the season when she hit a single to center field, scoring Jennifer Tomasetti from second.
The Golden Knights doubled their run total in the fourth as Tomasetti singled to center field, scoring Ashley Baker from third.
After getting two quick outs in the bottom of the fourth, UCF issued back-to-back walks to Southern Miss. Jennifer Fox stepped to the plate and singled to left field, scoring Brenan from second, making the score 5-2.
The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the sixth on a home run and back-to-back doubles to make the final score 7-2.
Lacey Gros improved to 10-10 on the season, pitching seven innings and giving up two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts. Baker fell to 1-7 in the circle for the Golden Knights, giving up seven runs on 13 hits.
Tomasetti had two of UCF's four hits and one run, while Davis was 3-for-4 for Southern Miss.
Game Two:
Southern Miss broke up Allison Kime's no-hitter in the fifth inning when Allison Bullard singled through the left side. Bullard later scored on a Charity Butler single to Kime to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
In USM's half of the sixth, the Golden Eagles plated five runs on four hits and one UCF error. Huerta led off the inning with a double to right center and then scored when Fox singled up the middle. Fox came around to score four batters later on a fielding error. Melissa Prouty singled to right field, scoring Shea Naramore from second. Butler then doubled to left field, plating runs four and five of the inning for Southern Miss.
The Golden Knights scored two runs in their half of the seventh. Walters led off the inning with a single to right field. Michelle Newton, who replaced Walters on the bases, advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, the Golden Knights loaded the bases with no outs. Everyone moved up 60 feet closer on a second wild pitch in the inning. Tomasetti hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Breanne Javier from second for UCF's final run of the game.
At the end of seven innings, Southern Miss was up, 6-2. Danielle Wymer went the distance for the Golden Eagles, giving up two runs on four hits with one strikeout. Kime fell to 9-10 on the season, pitching six innings and giving up six runs, one of which was earned, on six hits with five strikeouts.
Walters was 2-for-2 at the plate for UCF, while Butler was 2-for-3 for Southern Miss.
