ORLANDO - Led by first place performances from senior Tiffany Roebuck and freshman Shantile Blackburn, the UCF women's track and field team opened its outdoor season with a strong effort at the UCF Invitational Saturday.

Roebuck, who recently broke the school record in the weight throw at the Conference USA Indoor Championship, grabbed first place in the hammer throw with a mark of 173-feet, 10-inches (52.99 meters). It was just four inches less than the NCAA Regional qualifying standard. Meanwhile, classmate Rian Thomas took third at 171-7 (52.30m) and sophomore Kendra Howell was third at 130-3 (39.70m).

Later in the afternoon, Roebuck took third in the discus at 138-5 (42.19m) followed by sophomore Sade Kusimo in fourth at 126-11 (38.69m).

In other field events, sophomore Michelle Teuton was second at 10-10.25 (3.31m) in the pole vault, while freshman Dione Thomas took second in the long jump with a leap of 18-3.75 (5.58m).

On the track, Blackburn captured first place in the 1500m with a time of 4:51. Sophomore Kristen Zieminski was fourth in that same event at 4:53.94 and took second in the 800m at 2:21.47.

The Golden Knights also performed well in the 2,000m steeplechase despite the absence of senior and school recordholder Andrea Morrow. Sophomore Elizabeth Miller finished second at 7:32.10 with freshman Jamie Rzepecki close behind in third at 7:32.30.

"Even though we held out a few of athletes for rest after the conference meet and changed the lineup, I was very encouraged by the team's effort today," said head coach Marcia Mansur-Wentworth. "It was a great way to open the outdoor season."

The Golden Knights return to action on March 10 and 11 at the Disney Relays in Lake Buena Vista.
