ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Magon Paul scored two runs for the Golden Knights as the softball team split day one of the UCF Tournament at Merrill Park. UCF (9-8) opened the tournament with a 7-0 victory over Creighton (3-4) and then dropped a 1-0 decision to New Mexico State (14-7).
"Our pitchers did an excellent job today," said UCF head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie. "All three pitchers came through with big outs. We need better execution in tomorrow's games."
Game One: UCF put a dent on the board in the top of second inning as Paul walked to lead off the inning. Three batters later, Paul scored on a Creighton error.
The Golden Knights had no hits but were able to score four runs on five Bluejay errors in the third inning.
UCF picked up its first two hits of the game in the sixth inning to go up, 7-0.
At the end of the game, UCF had seven runs on two hits with no errors, while Creighton had no runs on four hits with seven errors.
Allison Kime earned the win for the Golden Knights, going the distance with a career-high 14 strikeouts and no walks. Cassidy Nee was pegged with the loss for the Bluejays, giving up five runs on no hits and six strikeouts.
Game Two: With bases loaded and one out, New Mexico State scored the lone run of the game on a sacrifice fly to left field in the bottom of the fourth.
The Golden Knights left seven runners on the bases to the Aggies' six.
Paul was tagged with the loss, giving up one run on one hit with one strikeout in three innings of work, while Sarah Seagraves went the distance for the Aggies with no runs on five hits and three strikeouts.
The Golden Knights return to Merrill Park Saturday afternoon for day two of the UCF Tournament. First pitch against Villanova is set for 1 p.m.
