Men's Golf in Fourth After Round One at the Hootie

AWENDAW, S.C. - Sonny Nimkhum shot a 1-under-par 70 Sunday as the Golden Knights posted a 5-over-par 289 in the opening round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. UCF is in fourth place in the field of 15 teams heading into Monday's second round at the Bulls Bay Golf Club.

Wake Forest leads the 54-hole event after carding a 9-under-par 275 Sunday. South Carolina is in second at 5-under-par, while North Carolina is one stroke ahead of UCF after posting a 4-over-par 288.

Wake Forest's Doug Manchester and South Carolina's Eirik Tage Johansen are tied for the lead in the individual standings after opening with 4-under-par 67s. Nimkhum is tied for sixth, while Kyle Davis is one stroke back in a tie for 13th at even par.

Nimkhum, who began his round on the 10th hole, made a birdie on that hole and then followed with two more in the first six holes to quickly get to 3-under-par. He made the turn at 3-under and found himself atop the leader board before running into trouble on the back side. He made a bogey on the first hole and then back-to-back bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes dropped him to even-par. He rebounded with a birdie on the seventh hole, his 16th hole of the day, to get back into red numbers.

Giwon Suh and Greg Forest are tied for 30th after shooting 3-over-par 74s. Stefan Wistorf is tied for 51st after carding a 5-over-par 76.

Suh was one shot out of the lead at 3-under-par through 14 holes, but made a quadruple-bogey nine on the par-5 sixth hole and then made a double-bogey six on the par-4 eighth hole, dropping him to 3-over-par.
