DELAND, Fla. - Shelly Frick was 4-for-7 at the plate for the Golden Knights as UCF defeated Marist, 3-1, and Samford, 4-2, on day two of the Stetson Tournament on Saturday in DeLand, Fla. The Golden Knights improved to 8-7 on the season.
"We are still battling the errors defensively," said head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie. "We still have a lot of work to do before conference play. It felt good that girls came out strong and picked up the wins. Shelly and Breanne (Javier) really came through for us at the plate tonight."
Game One:
Kacie Feaster put UCF on the scoreboard in the first when she hit a double to left field, plating Cici Alvarez from second.
Marist evened the score at one apiece in the top of the fourth on an Annie Castellano double to center field, scoring Laurissa Riley.
Feaster struck again in the fifth, this time hitting a two-run homer over the center field fence to give UCF the 3-1 victory.
Ashley Baker earned her first win of the season in the circle, giving up one run on five hits and three strikeouts. Jessica Green was pegged with the loss for Marist, giving up three runs on five hits and four strikeouts.
Feaster went 2-for-3 at the plate against the Red Foxes with a double, a home run, one run and three RBI.
Game Two:
Samford put a two-spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third on two hits and three errors.
With bases loaded in the fifth inning, Breanne Javier hit a two-run single to right center to even the score at two. Lindsay Dean scored the go-ahead run off a Magon Paul single to third base, while Javier added the fourth run of the inning when Frick singled to left field.
Allison Kime improved to 4-3 on the season for the Golden Knights, giving up two runs on three hits and Emilee Lewis was tagged with the loss for the Bulldogs, giving up four runs on four hits and three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.
The Golden Knights return to DeLand for the final day of the Stetson Tournament Sunday afternoon when the team takes on Stetson at two.
