DELAND, Fla. - Cici Alvarez goes 3-for-6 at the plate as the UCF softball team splits with Stetson Friday night. The Golden Knights took game one, 5-1, while the Hatters took game two, 6-5, in eight innings. The Black and Gold improved to 41-26-1 on the season and 13-7 in the Atlantic Sun, while Stetson goes to 35-18 on the season and 13-7 in the A-Sun.
The two games also determined the final seeds of the 2005 Atlantic Sun Tournament next week. With the split, UCF secured the No. 4 spot, while Stetson is seeded No. 5.
Alvarez was 3-for-6 at the plate with three singles and two runs. Lindsay Enders earned the win in game one, while Jennifer Tomasetti was pegged with the loss in game two.
In the top of the second, UCF put a three spot on the board when Enders singled to right field. Kacie Feaster advanced Enders to second on a two out single to left field. Jania Shinhoster then stepped into the batters box and ripped a three-run homer over the right field fence, her fourth on the season, scoring Enders and Feaster.
On a Bryttani Lindheim single to center field, the Golden Knights plated two more runs in the top of the fourth, making the score 5-0 in favor of UCF.
Stetson's bats came alive in the bottom of the seventh when Enders gave up three consecutive hits to load the bases. Enders then retired the next two Hatters before issuing a bases loaded walk to Nicole Forbes, scoring Shawna Wiggs from third.
UCF took game one by a score of 5-1. Shinhoster led the squad at the plate going 2-for-2 with a bunt single, a home run, two walks, two runs and three RBI, while Enders picked up her 21st win of the season after giving up one run on 11 hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
Brittani Houghton and Melissa Wiggins were both 3-for-3 at the plate for Stetson, while Houghton was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs on 10 hits, four walks and nine strikeouts.
The Golden Knights plated three runs in the top of the first of game two on one hit and one error. Alvarez and Stephanie Best scored when Crystle Krafft reached on the error with Amber Lamb scoring on a passed ball.
The Hatters plated one run in the bottom of the second when Sherilynn Wilder singled to center field scoring Angie Eguilior from second.
Wiggs started off Stetson's half of the third inning with a triple to right field followed by Wiggins who belted her 11th home run of the season over the fence in right center. At the end of the third, the score was tied at three apiece.
Wiggins added another run when she took the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth over the center field fence for her second consecutive home run of the game.
UCF regained the lead in the top of the seventh when the team plated two runs on one hit and one error.
Wiggins tied the game up for the Hatters when she hit her third consecutive home run over the fence in the bottom of the seventh.
Stetson won game two in the bottom of the eighth when Terry Lake was issued a led off walk and scored when Wilder ripped a double to left center.
Game two ended in the eighth with Stetson up, 6-5. Wiggins led the Hatters at the plate going 3-for-4 with three home runs, three runs and four RBI. Jennifer Buckley earned her seventh win of the season after giving up five runs on seven hits, five walks and eight strikeouts.
For UCF, Krafft and Feaster were 2-for-4 at the plate, while Tomasetti was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs on 10 hits, four walks and five strikeouts.
The Golden Knights return to the softball diamond on Thursday, May 12 when the team takes on Lipscomb at the 2005 Atlantic Sun Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla. The first pitch is slated for 9 a.m.
