ORLANDO - UCF head coach George O'Leary announced Tuesday that sophomore quarterback Kyle Israel will be out six to seven weeks with a stress fracture in his right leg. Israel sustained the injury in Saturday's scrimmage as he was accidentally rolled into by another player and leg-whipped.
"It's a crack in the bone," commented UCF head coach George O'Leary. "Dr. Krumins and our medical staff thought it was best to put a rod in Kyle's leg and he will be out six to seven weeks," added O'Leary.
With the loss of Israel, UCF has just two quarterbacks remaining in spring drills. The Golden Knights completed their 11th practice of the spring Tuesday morning. Junior Steven Moffett and junior walk-on Ed Marynowitz took all the snaps at quarterback, with Moffett taking roughly 90% of the snaps.
"Steven has had a good spring," continued O'Leary. "He has taken charge and I think he has shown more field leadership and the light bulb has come on. I am happy for him because that is the one thing I wanted to see this spring was for Steven to take charge. He has ability throwing the football and he is starting to understand what we want done to get us into a good play and out of a bad play."
The team worked on several phases of the game Tuesday, including heavy emphasis on red zone plays. The Golden Knights ran their red zone offense during the passing skeleton period and Moffett threw the ball well. The Winter Park native was 11-of-15 passing with a pair of fade passes to Brandon Marshall in the end zone.
UCF continues spring drills Wednesday morning from 9:20-11:30.
