DeLAND - The No. 75-ranked UCF women's tennis team capped off the regular season with a 6-1 win over rival Stetson at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
The Golden Knights improved to 10-7 overall and kept their conference record perfect at 4-0, positioning themselves well for the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Tournament. Stetson fell to 12-6, 3-1.
UCF took control early by sweeping all three doubles matches to earn the point. The duo of Megan Hunter and freshman Anna Yakimchenkova stayed undefeated at 8-0 on the season with a 9-8 (7-4) victory over Jackie Bohannon and Anna Leonenko at the No. 3 position.
Hunter and Yakimchenkova also earned wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Senior co-captain Kristina Lohmos also came up big at the top spot by beating Bohannon, 6-4, 6-3. It was her seventh win in eight matches.
The Golden Knights' only loss came in a battle at No. 2, where Stetson's Milica Milovanovic dropped junior co-captain Pamela Fernandez. Milovanovic won the first set 6-2 before losing the second 6-4. She eventually took the decisive third set 7-6 with a 14-12 victory in the tiebreaker.
"This was a terrific win for us against a tough Stetson team," said UCF head coach Patricia Allison. "Pam fought hard in her match and let everyone know what our team is all about."
The Golden Knights prepare for the Atlantic Sun Championship with an exhibition contest against Rollins College on April 8 at the UCF Tennis Complex. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
