IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 75 ranked UC-Irvine women's tennis team topped UCF, 4-3, at the Anteater Tennis Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, halting the Golden Knights' winning streak at five matches.
The Knights (7-7) started the day by sweeping the doubles. At the No. 2 position, senior co-captain Kristina Lohmos and freshman Kyla McNicol won their sixth consecutive match as they defeated Anteaters Becky Bernhard and Hui Leow, 8-4.
Junior co-captain Pamela Fernandez earned her team-high 13th win of the year, beating Izabela Mijic by a score of 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Megan Hunter contributed another win to the Knights' cause. After splitting sets with UCI's Jayme Hu, Hunter was up 3-0 when Hu was forced to retire.
The Anteaters (7-7) had already earned decisions at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles when they clinched the win with Anna Bentzer's 6-3, 6-4 victory over Lohmos at the No. 1 position.
"The team played well. We just came up short," said head coach Patricia Allison. "The players are disappointed, but we're looking to come back in a tough match this weekend at home."
The Golden Knights host Houston on March 19 at 10 a.m. at the UCF Tennis Complex.
