ORLANDO - The UCF baseball team continues its nine-game homestand Tuesday with an afternoon game vs. Bethune-Cookman at Jay Bergman Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. as the Golden Knights will send senior right-hander Darren Newlin to the hill.
No. 24 UCF (2-0) opened the 2005 season over the weekend with a two-game series sweep of Florida International in Orlando. The Golden Knights defeated FIU 3-2 in 10 innings on opening day as junior catcher Drew Butera delivered a game-winning, RBI-single with two outs to plate the winning run.
Bethune-Cookman lost one game at home and two on the road to USF over the weekend to fall to 0-3 to start the young season.
On Sunday, UCF led 3-0 going into the ninth inning before the Golden Panthers scored a pair of runs with two outs before freshman right-hander Jeremy Thorne tallied the final out for the save.
Senior left fielder Dee Brown was UCF's top offensive player on the weekend. The Brooksville native hit .444 for the series with three RBI to lead the Golden Knight attack.
UCF looks to extend its winning streak vs. Bethune-Cookman to five games after going a perfect 4-0 vs. the Wildcats in 2004. Newlin makes his first career start vs. B-CC after finishing 2004 with a perfect 5-0 record. Last season Newlin split time between the bullpen and the starting rotation, pitching 60.1 innings with a 3.13 ERA.
The game will be broadcast live on ucfathletics.com, the official athletics website of UCF.
