Women's Tennis Tops Jacksonville

ORLANDO - The UCF women's tennis team battled to a 5-2 victory over Atlantic Sun rival Jacksonville on Tuesday afternoon at the UCF Tennis Complex. The Golden Knights remained undefeated at 2-0 in conference play and improved to 3-6 overall. Jacksonville dropped to 5-3, 0-2 A-Sun.

"It was really a team win for us," said Knights' head coach Patricia Allison. "To come off a tough road trip with matches against Florida Atlantic and Miami and be able to win like this is incredible."

UCF, which was playing its fifth match in eight days, earned the doubles point with convincing wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 position then took the first two singles points. Freshman Anna Yakimchenkova defeated Megan Williams, 6-1, 6-3 then senior Ola Luczak took a 6-0, 7-5 win over Daphne Bourot.

The Dolphins made the score, 3-2, after earning victories at No. 4 and No. 5. Junior co-captain Pamela Fernandez lost her first set 6-2 to Lena Willi but rebounded to win the last two sets, 6-1, 6-4 to clinch the match for UCF.

Meanwhile, at the No. 1 position, UCF senior co-captain Kristina Lohmos defeated the 2004 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year Emese Sulyos, 7-5, 6-2. It was Sulyos second loss in 23 matches.

The Knights return to action on Feb. 26 when they host Florida A&M at 11 a.m.
