ORLANDO, Fla. - The UCF women's soccer team was a perfect 9-0 against Division I schools in the state of Florida this season including victories over #12 Florida State, #10 Florida and Miami. The Golden Knights also played Florida International, University of South Florida, Florida Atlantic, Stetson and Jacksonville twice.
The Golden Knights outscored their opponents 24-6 while taking 140 shots to 80 by their opponents. In the victories over #12 Florida State and #10 Florida, UCF scored a combined six goals while FSU and UF scored two goals each. Freshman Kendra Flock scored both of the game-winning goals for the Knights.
The defense was able to shut down USF, Florida Atlantic, Stetson and Jacksonville twice, allowed only one goal in the Florida International and Miami games and allowed two goals in the Florida State and Florida games. Senior JoAnna Black, junior Summer Savage and freshman Jessica Hallgren were a dynamite force in the backfield allowing the opposing offenses to take just 80 shots. Junior goalkeeper Julie Snaman became a wall with four complete game shut-outs and stopped just about anything that was kicked or headed her way allowing just six goals on 80 shots. Snaman and sophomore Beth Harless combined for a shut-out against Florida Atlantic when UCF defeated the Owls 3-0.
Flock led the Golden Knights with five goals and two assists for a total of 12 points. Junior Courtney Baines was second on the team in these nine games with two goals and five assists for a total of nine points. Baines' two goals were penalty kicks against USF and Florida in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Senior Allison Blagriff, junior Jennifer Montgomery and sophomore Shannon Wing all had three goals. Montgomery scored the game-winning goals against USF and Jacksonville in the regular season, Blagriff against Florida Atlantic in the regular season and Wing against Jacksonville in the Atlantic Sun Tournament.
Senior Becca Eshelman, junior Savage, sophomores Monique Fireall, Kate McCain, Rachel Overstreet and Jessalyn Withers and freshmen Arielle Orr and Rachel Whiteaker all scored one goal in the nine games. Fireall scored the game-winning goal against Stetson, McCain against Florida International and Orr against Miami.
Junior Shaina Ross and sophomore Kristen Bilby saw significant playing time in games against Florida schools. Ross saw action in eight of the nine games while Bilby saw action in all nine taking three shots with two shots on goal.
Junior Becky Brandt, sophomores Kate Begley and Amy Gharibvand and freshmen Stacey George, Kelsey Kravec, Lauren McDevitt and Kaylyn Smith saw limited action in the nine in-state games which they will be able to carry into next year as experience.
The Golden Knights completed their season Sunday, November 14 after making it to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
