ATLANTA, Ga. -Brian Brooks limited Georgia State to one unearned run over 4.1 innings to lead No. 20 UCF to a 6-5 victory over the Panthers in game one of a doubleheader. In the second game, Dave Lambert drove in the game-winning run in the eighth inning to lead the Golden Knights to a come-from-behind 10-9 victory.
With the doubleheader sweep, UCF improved to 42-14 overall and 24-6 in the A-Sun while Georgia State ended its season at 18-36, 11-19 in the league. The 24 A-Sun wins set a new school record for UCF.
Brooks (3-1) yielded four hits and recorded one strikeout to lead UCF to its 41st win of the season. The Golden Knights rallied from an early 4-0 deficit after two innings for the comeback win.
On Senior Day, Georgia State senior Brian Williams hit his fourth home run of the season to left field to put the Panthers on top 1-0 in the bottom of the second. Later in the inning with two outs and on a 1-2 count, senior Tim Burgess connected on a three-run home run to extend the Panther lead to 4-0.
UCF answered with three runs in the third inning. Dee Brown laced a RBI-single through the left side to score Clay Timpner to cut the deficit to 4-1. Following a 51-minute rain delay, Ryan Bono added a RBI-single and the Golden Knights scored one run on a double-play ball hit by Chandler Rose to cut the deficit to 4-3 in the third.
Georgia State added an unearned run in the third to extend the lead to 5-3.
The Golden Knights battled back to score three runs in the fifth to close out the scoring at 6-5. Rose drove a double to right-center to score Ryan Bono, cutting the GSU lead to 5-4. Kevin Richmond followed with a double down the left field line to score two, giving UCF its first lead of the day at 6-5.
Brooks made the lead stand from that point, and freshman reliever Tim Bascom entered the game in the bottom of the seventh with a runner on second base to close the game out. After a walk, Bascom induced the game-ending, double play, to earn his first career save.
Game two started again with Georgia State racing out to an early lead. The Panthers scored three runs on one swing in the first as Charlie Pelt hit a bases loaded double to give GSU a 3-0 lead. Ryan Clark added a RBI-single through the left side on a perfect hit-and-run to give the Panthers a 4-0 advantage.
In the UCF third, the Golden Knights sent nine batters to the plate, totaled six hits and scored four runs to tie the game at four. Brown drove in UCF’s first run of the game with a RBI-groundout and Ryan Bono added a two-out, RBI-single to bring UCF to within two at 4-2. The two-out rally continued with a double by Dave Lambert into the gap in left-center, scoring Bono from first. Rose followed with a single to center to tie the game at four. Three of the four runs in the inning came with two outs for UCF.
Georgia State regained the lead in the third at 6-4 as the Panthers forced UCF starter Darren Newlin from the game.
The see-saw affair continued in the fourth as the Golden Knights scored two quick runs to tie the game at six. Matt Ray singled up the middle to score Drake Wade and Timpner.
Georgia State scored two more runs in the fourth to go back on top, 8-6.
In the fifth, it was time for UCF to take its first lead of the day as Timpner drilled a three-run home run to right field to give UCF a 9-8 lead. The home run was Timpner’s team-leading fifth of the season.
The UCF lead was short lived, as Rose committed a throwing error in the home half of the fifth to lead to an unearned run for the Panthers to tie the game again at 9-9.
After two scoreless innings, the game went into extra innings as Lambert drilled a RBI-single through the right side to score David Mann. Mann gave UCF a 10-9 lead after starting the one-out rally with a bunt single.
UCF freshman reliever Brett Bordwine (1-0) made the lead stand with three innings of shutout relief for his first career win. The Melbourne native limited Georgia State to just one hit over his 3.0 innings of work.
UCF returns to action Wednesday in the first game of the 2004 Atlantic Sun Championships in DeLand. The Golden Knights face No. 6 seed Campbell at 11 a.m. at Melching Field. Wednesday’s game will be carried live on the Internet only via Yahoo! Sports Audio Package.
