ORLANDO – Freshman pitcher Taylor Meier assembled career-highs in strikeouts (7) and innings pitched (7.0) to lead No. 23 UCF to an 8-0 victory over visiting Bethune-Cookman Tuesday evening at Jay Bergman Field. The Golden Knights won their third straight game to improve to 24-5 overall while Bethune-Cookman dropped to 17-13. UCF has matched its best start in school history with the 24-5 mark with the 2001 and 1975 teams.
UCF scored two runs on one swing in the third inning when Dee Brown drilled his first home run of the season to right field to give the Golden Knights a 2-0 lead. The home run for Brown was his first since May 17, 2002 vs. Mercer at Jay Bergman Field.
A two-run fourth was highlighted by RBI-singles off the bat of Clay Timpner and Matt Ray.
UCF put the game away with a three-run sixth to take an 8-0 lead. Ray delivered his second RBI of the night with a RBI-single and Ryan Bono delivered a two-run double to complete the UCF scoring.
Ray contributed a career-high four hits with a perfect 4-for-4 night with two runs and two RBI.
The eight-run cushion was more than enough for Meier. The freshman right-hander limited Bethune-Cookman to just four hits over his 7.0 innings of work.
The Golden Knights outhit the Wildcats 15-5 including two hits by Dave Lambert and Timpner.
UCF is back in action Saturday, April 3 at Jacksonville. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. as Matt Fox will start game one and Kyle Bono gets the nod in game two.
