ORLANDO – Sophomore Drew Butera was 3-for-6 with four RBI to lead UCF past Wagner 16-2 Monday evening at Jay Bergman Field in Orlando. The Golden Knights set season-highs in runs (16) and stolen bases (7) in their fifth straight win of the season. With the victory, UCF improved to 15-4 overall while Wagner dropped to 2-5.
UCF led just 2-1 until an eight-run fifth inning broke the game wide open. The Golden Knights scored the eight runs on just four hits in the frame. Clay Timpner got the inning started with a RBI-triple to center field to score David Mann. The triple also extended Timpner’s team-best hitting streak to 17 games on the season.
Butera also drove in two of his game-high four RBI in the frame with a two-run single as the Golden Knight sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning. The eight-run inning was also the highest scoring inning of the year for the Golden Knights.
UCF pushed across another five runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to close out the scoring at 16-2.
Freshman starter Taylor Meier (2-0) set career-highs in innings pitched (5.1) and strikeouts (6) en route to his second win of the season.
Despite 14 hits, only Butera finished with a multi-hit game as 11 other Golden Knights collected a hit.
Mann, Timpner and Dee Brown each stole two bases as the Golden Knights totaled seven on the night.
The Golden Knights and Seahawks continue the three-game series Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. Junior left-handed pitcher Mike Mercadante will make his first career start for UCF.
