ORLANDO – UCF sophomore pitcher Kyle Bono tossed his first complete game shutout of his career and junior pitcher Jaime Douglas earned his first career victory to propel the host Golden Knights to a doubleheader and series sweep of Gardner-Webb Saturday at Jay Bergman Field. The Golden Knights shutout the Bulldogs 2-0 in game one and defeated Gardner-Webb 5-1 in the second game to preserve the series sweep.
With the two wins, UCF improved to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in the A-Sun while Gardner-Webb dropped to 8-11 and 3-3 in the conference.
UCF held Gardner-Webb scoreless for 21 1/3 innings in the series before the Bulldogs scored their only run of the series in the sixth inning of game two. Dating back to the Lipscomb series, UCF had gone 28 1/3 innings without allowing a run.
In the first game Saturday, Bono (2-0) was dominant all day long as he held the Bulldogs to just four hits. The sophomore right-hander totaled seven strikeouts as he faced just 24 batters on the day.
Dee Brown and Kevin Richmond contributed the only RBIs of the game while Clay Timpner was 1-for-2 with a run scored to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
In the day’s second game, Douglas (1-1) limited the Bulldogs to no runs on three hits and two strikeouts for his first collegiate win.
The Golden Knights scored three runs on five hits in the first inning for all of the run support needed for Douglas and reliever Darren Newlin.
Newlin pitched the game’s final three innings for his second save of the season. He did allow Gardner-Webb’s only run of the series on two hits with one strikeout.
Timpner was 2-for-3 with a run scored to extend his hitting streak to 16 games in the second game of the doubleheader. Chandler Rose was 1-for-3 with a clutch two-out, two-run double in the sixth inning for the victors.
