Baseball Sweeps Monmouth With 5-1 Win

ORLANDO – Junior left fielder Dee Brown was 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI to lead the Golden Knights past Monmouth 5-1 Sunday afternoon at Jay Bergman Field. Brown led UCF with a .500 average and six RBI in the three-game sweep over the Hawks. With the win, the Golden Knights improved to 9-3 on the year while Monmouth dropped to 1-5.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Taylor Meier (1-0) pitched well in his first collegiate start, lasting 5.0 innings for the win. Meier yielded just one run on six hits with four strikeouts.

The Golden Knights used a two-run first to take a 2-0 lead. Brown singled to right field to score Clay Timpner for UCF’s first run while Ryan Bono followed with a RBI-double to plate Brown.

The Hawks scored their first earned run of the series in the fourth on a RBI-single by Justin Braun.

The Golden Knights used a three-run sixth to put the game out of reach. Brown scored on a wild pitch and Marshall Bernhard added a sacrifice fly for the first two runs of the inning. Drake Wade added a two-out, RBI-triple to close out the scoring at 5-1.

Freshman reliever Brian Brooks made the lead stand, pitching 3.0 innings of shutout baseball. The Oviedo native yielded just one hit and struck out a career-high six.

The Golden Knights totaled 11 hits on the day including two by Bono and Dave Lambert. UCF also finished with a season-best three double plays.

UCF returns to the diamond next Friday at Lipscomb. The first A-Sun series of the year for both schools begins Friday at 3 p.m. in Nashville. The two teams finish the three-game set with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
