ORLANDO – Sophomore pitcher Kyle Bono tossed a career-high 6.2 innings and yielded just one unearned run to lead UCF past Monmouth 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Jay Bergman Field. Bono (1-0) earned his first win of the season after he yielded just one unearned run on three hits with six strikeouts. With the win, UCF improved to 8-3 overall while Monmouth dropped to 1-4.
Junior second baseman Kevin Richmond opened the scoring in the second inning with a two-out, RBI-triple to score Ryan Bono.
Junior left fielder Dee Brown gave Kyle Bono a 3-0 cushion to work with after a bases loaded, two-run single in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 3-0.
Monmouth got one run back in the seventh, but the Golden Knights answered with a run in the home half of the seventh to close the scoring at 4-1.
Junior reliever Darren Newlin pitched the final 2.1 innings to earn his first collegiate save. The right-hander did not allow any runs or hits to go along with two strikeouts.
UCF center fielder Clay Timpner finished 1-for-4 with a run scored to extend his hitting streak to eight games.
The Golden Knights look for their third straight win and the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m.
