ORLANDO – UCF shortstop Jon Cooper drilled the go-ahead, two-RBI single in the seventh inning to lead the Golden Knights to a 7-6 victory over Utah Saturday afternoon at Jay Bergman Field. Cooper, who entered the game in the fourth inning, broke a 5-5 tie with his two-run single.
The win was the fourth straight for the Golden Knights (6-2) while Utah dropped to 0-5 on the year.
The Golden Knights opened the scoring in the first inning as Dee Brown singled home Clay Timpner to give UCF a 1-0 lead. Timpner walked twice on the day, stole two bases and tied a career-high with three runs scored.
The Utes scored two unearned runs in the top of the second to take their first lead of the series, 2-1.
The Golden Knights added a two-run inning of their own in the third to take the lead at 3-2.
The Utes regained the lead with one swing in the fourth as Tyson Olson drilled a two-run home run to right field giving Utah a 4-3 advantage.
A solo home run by Cort Wilson in the sixth extended the lead to 5-3.
UCF tied the contest in the sixth with a two-run frame. Chandler Rose walked with the bases loaded and David Mann delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game at five.
In the seventh, Cooper took advantage of a bases loaded situation with a line drive up the middle to plate two runs.
Utah threatened with one run in the eighth, but UCF reliever Tim Bascom (3-0) got out of the inning and retired the Utes in the ninth for his team-leading third win of the season.
The Golden Knights look for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. The Golden Knights will send junior left-handed pitcher Jaime Douglas (0-1) to the mound. The game will be aired live on the Yahoo! Sports Audio Package via WNSC.
