BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UCF baseball team swept a doubleheader at Samford Saturday by defeating the Bulldogs 11-10 in eight innings and 6-4 in the nightcap. With the two wins, UCF swept the three-game series and the Golden Knights have now won six straight Atlantic Sun games on the road. UCF improved to 19-8 overall and 4-2 in the conference while Samford dropped to 5-19 and 2-10 in the A-Sun.
Ryan Bear had at least one hit in both games to extend his season-high hitting streak to 17 games.
In the opener, Bear extended his hitting streak to 16 games by going 2-for-5 with five RBI. Bear launched a three-run home run while also tying a career-best with the five runs driven in including the game-winning run.
UCF twice rallied from six-run deficits to capture the victory.
Kyle Bono (3-1) got the win in relief for UCF after tossing 3.0 shutout innings. Bono allowed no runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
Clay Timpner also had a monster game in the opener, finishing 3-for-5 while tying a career high with four RBI. Timpner came through with an important three-run double to tie the game at 10.
The two teams combined for 21 runs, 33 hits and six errors in the opener.
In the nightcap, the two teams continued their high-scoring ways with five runs in the first inning. UCF lit up the scoreboard for three runs while Samford scored two runs.
UCF starter Mark Michael settled down after allowing the two first-inning runs to retire 11 straight batters to lead the Golden Knights to the win.
UCF scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings to push the lead to 6-2. In the fifth, Bear drilled a triple to right-center to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. Dee Brown followed with a RBI-single on the next pitch to give UCF the 6-2 lead.
Samford tried to attempt a rally by scoring one run in both the fifth and sixth, but Michael went the distance for UCF’s first complete game of the season. Michael (4-1) allowed four runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
