ORLANDO – The UCF baseball team improved its winning streak to five games after sweeping a doubleheader from Pace Thursday night at Jay Bergman Field. The Golden Knights improved to 14-5 on the year after winning the first game 9-2 and the nightcap 7-3.
In the first game, junior left-handed pitcher Burt Clark (1-0) tossed 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts to earn his first win of the season. Junior reliever Andrew Daly tossed the final 2.1 innings with three strikeouts to notch his first career save.
P.J. Lehmann led the way for UCF in game one by going 2-for-2 with a career-high three RBI. Dee Brown also extended his hitting streak to nine games with a 3-for-3 performance with three runs scored.
In the second game, senior walk-on David Torres tossed 4.2 innings and struck out a career-best seven batters to earn his first career victory. Torres allowed just two hits and one run in his first career start. Freshman right-handed reliever Ryan Ramsey pitched the final 1.2 innings with two strikeouts for career save number one.
Clay Timpner was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the nightcap while Blaine Schulte was 2-for-3 with a RBI. Timpner had the big hit of the night with a two-run triple in the sixth inning to give UCF a five-run cushion.
Ryan Bear also collected a hit in each game of the doubleheader to extend his hitting streak to nine games.
The Golden Knights return to the diamond Friday at 7 p.m. in their A-Sun opener vs. Georgia State. The game can be heard live on the UCF ISP Sports Network. Marc Daniels will handle the play-by-play duties on 740-AM The Team with the pregame show starting at 6:45 p.m.
