Jay Bergman Named A-Sun Coach Of The Year

DeLand, Fla.- UCF head coach Jay Bergman was named the 2002 Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year Tuesday night at the annual post-season Atlantic Sun Baseball awards banquet. The honor for Bergman was his sixth A-Sun Coach of the Year award, the most ever by a coach in the conference.

The honors did not end their for UCF as several players were also selected to various teams, including the Atlantic Sun’s Freshman of the Year, Dee Brown. Brown became the first UCF player ever to be named the conference’s freshman of the year. Brown was also the only freshman selected as a member of the all-Atlantic Sun first team. Brown was also a member of the all-Atlantic Sun freshmen team.

Joining Brown on the all-A-Sun first team was senior shortstop Mike Myers. It was the first time in Myers’ career that he earned first-team honors in the A-Sun.

On the all-Atlantic Sun second team, UCF had two players named to the squad. Junior Mark Michael was named as a starting pitcher to the team while sophomore David Mann garnered the honor of second-team designated hitter in the conference.

On the all-freshman team, UCF outfielder Clay Timpner joined his teammate Dee Brown on the all-freshman team.

Bergman and the other award winners will look to capture their second straight A-Sun conference championship beginning Wednesday when the No. 1 seeded Golden Knights face No. 6 Samford. Game time is set for 11 a.m. with live in-game statistics available at www.ucfathletics.com.
