BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Mike Myers brought in UCF’s first three runs in game one Saturday afternoon against Campbell University with one swing of the bat in the third inning. UCF went on to take the game 6-3. Game two of the double header saw the Knights take the sweep (22-14, 10-2) with a 10-2 final. UCF had a huge second inning, posting eight runs on six hits.
Campbell came out playing aggressive baseball in game one and took the early lead in the first inning. The Camels banged out two hits and took advantage of two errors at third base to grab their only lead of the series. Myers put an end to any thoughts of keeping the lead with his second home run of the season scoring Adam Miller and David Mann.
Campbell drew back with in one on a RBI single by Mike Wineke, who was 3-for-4 with all three of Campbell RBI’s in the game. The Knights stretched the lead in the fifth, posting three runs on three hits. Myers scored the last run of the inning when he stole home on a double steal. Campbell added a run in its half of the fifth inning to make the final score 6-3 in favor of the Knights.
Bo Hall stayed perfect on the season improving his record to 4-0, with five innings of three run ball. Von David Stertzbach returned to his role as a reliever and was on form throwing two scoreless innings and earning his first save of the season.
The Golden Knights drew first blood in game two of the double header and in a big way, with eight runs off of six hits in the second inning. After the first batter was retired UCF strung together four straight singles, the fourth one coming off the bat of senior George Cox. Cox’s hit brought in Miller and Clay Timpner. Mann took a walk to load the bases for the second time in the inning and Myers followed with an RBI double, scoring Wayne Summers and Cox. The fifth run came in on an error off the bat of Dee Brown and Myers scampered home on a wild pitch to score the Knights sixth. Timpner claimed the next RBI with a single and Summers added UCF’s last run of the inning accepting a bases loaded walk.
Campbell put up its two runs in the second inning, but was not able to get any closer as UCF starter Lincoln Mincks (4-3) combined with relievers Jason Graham and Zach Sutton to shut down the Camels offense. The Golden Knights added a run in each of the last two innings to give them a convincing 10-2 win.
UCF gave its bats a work out while visiting the Camels, banging out 41 hits and scoring 36 runs in the three game series. The Golden Knights also found the homerun swing, driving four balls over the fences. Myers lead the way for the Knights going 7-for-14 with nine RBI’s, six runs scored, a stolen base and one long ball. Fresh off his A-Sun player of the week nomination, Brown collected eight hits and three RBI’s.
UCF returns for a four game home stand, starting with the University of South Florida on Tuesday, April 9. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Jay Bergman Field.
