ORLANDO - A strong pitching performance by the entire team and a clutch extra inning single by Dee Brown propelled UCF to a 4-3 victory over Vanderbilt University Friday night at Jay Bergman Field. It was a big win for a team who had dropped the previous 4 games, and hopefully a confidence booster that will help them in the 3 remaining games this weekend.
It was an all Kentucky matchup on the mound-- UCF's Mark Michael against Vanderbilt's Jeremy Sowers. The Commodores took advantage of Michael right off the bat in the 1st inning. Third baseman John Prothro's bases loaded double to left center field would give Vanderbilt an early 3-0 lead, but they wouldn't score any more runs after that. Michael retired every batter he faced up until the 8th inning, 20 consecutive batters, until he walked second baseman Scott Vanderhoff with 1 out, and Jay Bergman pulled Michael out in favor of reliever Clint Wells. Michael pitched another strong game for the Knights-- 3 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, and 12 strikeouts, but wouldn't pick up the win.
Jeremy Sowers pitched a good game himself, and the true freshman went the entire 9 innings before the game went into extra innings. He gave 6 hits and 3 runs, but only 2 of those were earned. He struck out 10 and walked on.
UCF scored 1 run each in the first, fifth, and sixth innings. A Nathan Kragt double and a Jeremy Frost single would set up Rich Wallace's RBI single in the first inning scoring Kragt. Centerfielder Jason Graham led off the fifth inning with a bunt down the third base line for a single, and would move over to second base on a balk by Sowers. He reached third when Bo Hall grounded out, and scored on Mike Myer's sacrifice fly to left field for the second out of the inning. The bottom of the sixth was an odd one-- Dee Brown walked with 2 outs to load the bases after a previous Rich Wallace basehit and after George Cox was hit by a pitch, and Jason Graham was up. Graham struck out swinging, but catcher Jonathan Douillard lost the ball which allowed Graham to reach first safely and George Cox to score from third which tied the game at 3.
Relief pitcher Zach Sutton bailed out Von Stertzbach in the 9th inning after he allowed the first two batters on base, but preserved the tie game going into extra innings. Bo Hall came in to pitch in the 10th, and shut down an opportunity for Vanderbilt to score in the 11th. Cesar Nicolas walked and Sean Luellwitz reached base on an error, and the Commodores had a real opportunity to take the lead with only 1 out and players on the first and second. Hall dashed any hopes of a Vanderbilt rally though when he struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
Vanderbilt errors helped the Knights in the 11th when Adam Miller made it safe to first, and then second, on a throwing error by the shortstop. With 1 out already in the inning, Miller advanced to third on a wild pitch. Vandy pitcher Chris Maultsby intentionally walked Ty Hanson to set up a possible double play that would end the inning, but Dee Brown wouldn't have any of that. Brown singled to right field to send Miller home and get the Knights their 6th victory of the season.
Bo Hall (1-0) would receive the win and Chris Maultsby the loss (0-1).
UCF (6-10) hosts Siena on Saturday in a doubleheader at 1 o'clock. Lincoln Mincks and Burt Clark will take the mound for the Knights in those two games. UCF also hosts Temple on Sunday at 2 o'clock, and will go with Brad Busbin.
