ORLANDO -- Dee Brown put his name in the UCF record books Friday night against Samford University when he laced a two run home run in the fifth inning, making him the first player to score a touchdown and hit a home run in the same academic year. Brown was also responsible for the Knights 7-6 victory when he hit a sac fly to center field, plating David Mann for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
UCF fell behind early with the Bulldogs pushing across one run in the first and two in their half of the third inning. UCF grabbed one run in the third inning as well when Jason Graham came home, scoring on a fielder’s choice that went to second. The Bulldogs added their fourth run in as many innings to make the score 4-1, giving the impression that their bats could not be stopped on a beautiful night for baseball at Jay Bergman Field.
UCF pitching put the brakes on the rest of the way, only surrendering two more runs, which came in the seventh inning. Samford used one hit to drive in two runs after the first three batters had reached on walks courtesy of David Shipps. UCF was forced to use three pitchers in the seventh inning alone, with Clint Wells recording the first out and Brad Busbin the last two.
UCF had its most productive inning at the plate in the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits and using two walks and a wild pitch to its advantage. Graham smoked one over second base bringing in Adam Miller, which was followed by a single to short that scored two. Mann, UCF’s hottest bat of late, scorched one to short that took a bad hop and went of the fielders shoulder into shallow left-center, allowing the tying runs to come in.
Brown put the Knights on top 6-4 and the crowd on their feet in the fifth when he knocked his first home run as a Golden Knight over the left field wall. Brown lined Frank Yeilding’s 2-1 offering out of the park with one down and Clay Timpner standing on first base.
With the game tied at six in the bottom of the ninth it was time for more heroics from Mr. Brown. Mann was the fire starter once again as he led off the inning with a double down the left-flied line. Mike Myers was thrown out on a sac bunt that advanced the runner and the next two batters were intentionally walked to load the bases with one out and Brown striding to the plate. Brown did not disappoint as he hit the 1-1 pitch, not deep to center, but deep enough for the speedy Mann to tag and score with out a play at the plate. Brown finished the night going 2-for-4 with three RBI’s and a run scored.
Graham joined Brown and Mann as the most productive at the plate on the night going 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored, while getting the start in right field.
Neither of the starters factored in the final decision. Zach Sutton pitched a perfect ninth minus the hit batter, striking out one and recording his first win of the year. He is now 1-1 and UCF stand at 18-12 overall with two games against Samford on Saturday, March 30. The Knights and Bulldogs will play two seven-inning games, starting at 1:00 p.m. at Jay Bergman Field.
