JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -- Clay Timpner doubled down the right-field line in the seventh inning driving in Jeremy Frost, who had tripled to right center. Timpner's RBI was the deciding factor in UCF's 5-4 victory. Friday nights win was UCF's eighth consecutive over Jacksonville State. It also gives UCF a 13-3 career record against its conference rivals.
UCF used a three run second to jump out to an early lead. The Knights started the inning with three consecutive hits and took advantage of an error, wild pitch and two walks. Jacksonville State put two of its own on the board in the second, but was not able to take the lead at any point in the game. Jacksonville State tied the game, chasing Burt Clark off the mound with a solo homerun, a walk and a RBI single in the fifth.
That would be all the offense Jacksonville State could muster as Von David Stertzbach came to the Knights rescue for the third time this season. He entered the game with one out and two runs already home in the fifth and was able to put an end to the bleeding. Stertzbach improved his season record to 3-0, while throwing 4.1 innings in relief. He successfully retired the last 12 batters he faced and recorded eight strikeouts on the evening. Clark and Stertzbach combined to fan 15 Jacksonville State batters in the game.
The Golden Knights were able to squeeze out a win, squandering many opportunities in the game to break things open. The Knights left 12 men on base, stranding two men in the ninth and leaving the sacks full in the eighth.
Ty Hanson continued to swing the bat well for the Knights going 2-5 with a RBI and a run scored. Timpner added a single in the fifth to go with his game winning double and Dee Brown contributed to the cause with two hits on the night.
UCF will play a double header against Jacksonville State on Saturday, March 23, starting at 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
