ORLANDO -- The UCF baseball team stretched its winning streak to three while staying undefeated at home this year with a 3-0 record at Jay Bergman Field. UCF treated the Charleston Southern Buccaneers to an 18 run game, scoring in every inning except the seventh.
The Knights were led by senior catcher George Cox who was 3-4 on the night with two homeruns, a bases clearing double and eight RBI’s, which ties the school record for RBI’s in a game. Cox started the scoring in the first inning when he took the 3-1 pitch over the left field wall for a two run shot. This was Cox’s first homerun of the year. Cox struck again in the fourth inning when he capped of the Knights two out rally with a double down the left field line knocking in David Mann, who had reached on a bunt single, Bo Hall and Dee Brown, who had both got on via the walk.
The Knights batted around the order and put six on the board in the fifth, which was high lighted by Cox’s second home run of the game with two men on.
Junior Ryan Bear made the most of his second start of the season. Bear played the all nine innings in right field for the Knights and was an impressive 3-4 with five RBI’s and the teams first triple of the season when he crushed the ball into the right center gap.
Preseason Atlantic Sun Freshman-of-the-year, Matt Fox got the nod tonight and started at short stop. Fox did not disappoint and was 3-4 on the night with three runs scored and an RBI.
Lincoln Mincks (Des Moines, Iowa earned his first win as a Golden Knight throwing six strong innings in which he stuck out three and gave up one unearned run. The Knights are yet to give up an earned run at home this season and had shut out their opponents for 23 consecutive innings until the Buccaneers pushed one across in the fifth inning.
The Golden Knights will wrap up their two game series with Charleston Southern Wednesday, February 27 at Jay Bergman Field. Game time will now be at 3 p.m.
