LAFAYETTE, La. -- Louisiana-Lafayette rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Ragin' Cajuns came back to defeat the Golden Knights 4-3 to take the sweep at Tigue Moore Field Sunday afternoon.
UCF's Dee Brown singled home Wayne Summers with a two-out single to right field in the top of the 10th to give the Golden Knights a 3-2 lead.
The Ragin' Cajuns led off the bottom of the 10th as Scott Carboni singled through the right side of the infield. Chase Lambin put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Carboni to second. Mike Kabel smacked reliever Nick Whidden's (1-1) 2-2 pitch to centerfield for a triple. Centerfielder Jeremy Frost hit the wall in pursuit as the ball rolled away from Frost allowing Kabel to reach third base. Robert Shelton hit a high pop fly to left field, but Brown's throw couldn't beat Kabel to the plate.
UCF starter Paul Lubrano pitched brilliantly for the Golden Knights throwing 6.1 innings giving up two runs on four hits, while walking two and fanning five. The UCF bullpen kept the Cajuns from scoring over the next three innings as Von David Stertzbach, Jason Graham and Clint Wells combined on the blank, while walking six and stranding 10 runners.
The Golden Knights (1-6) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning as Nathan Kragt was walked with the bases loaded to score Ty Hanson.
UL Lafayette (5-1) rallied with a run in the sixth inning as Brad Saloom singled home Dallas Morris. The Cajuns scored in the seventh on a controversial play. With the bases loaded and one-out, Stertzbach induced Jason Wilson to hit a ground ball to second base, Adam Miller threw the ball to Kragt who went to throw to first but was illegally barrel-rolled by Shelton at second base. Wilson was safe at first and Carboni scored the go-ahead run. UCF head coach Jay Bergman pleaded the NCAA rule and his case to third base umpire Myron Miller, who threw out Mike Myers on Saturday for arguing balls and strikes, and was promptly ejected by Miller on this occassion. It was the first time Bergman had been ejected from a game since April of 1998.
The Golden Knights would tie the game in the top of the ninth inning. Kragt hit a one-out single to left field. Pinch-hitter Fritz Reichardt singled to center to continue the rally. Miller hit a sharp grounder to shortstop, but Saloom's throw to first while attempting to complete the double play flew wide into the UCF dugout allowing Kragt to score with the tying run.
Cajun reliever Jordy Templet (2-1) was credited with the buzzard win in 1.1 innings of work giving up a run and a hit.
The Golden Knights will play their home opener on February 22 against Monmouth University at Jay Bergman Field. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
