LAFAYETTE, La. -- Justin Gabriel struck out 13 UCF batters, while Robert Shelton smacked a grand slam leading the Ragin' Cajuns to a 6-3 win over the Golden Knights at Tigue Moore Field Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights drop their fifth straight game falling to 1-5. The 1-5 record is the Golden Knights worst start since the program began in 1973.
Gabriel (1-0) threw 7.2 innings giving up three runs on seven hits, four walks and the 13 punchouts in 127 pitches. Jordy Templet earned his first save of the season with 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.
UCF battled in what might have been their best played game of the season. Golden Knights' starting pitcher Mark Michael threw five-plus innings, yielding two runs, one earned, on six hits with four strikeouts in 101 pitches.
The Golden Knights took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. George Cox drew a one-out walk, followed by a double to right-centerfield by Wayne Summers. Dee Brown ripped a single past third baseman Shelton to score Cox and Summers.
The Cajuns (4-1) scored two runs in the sixth inning and hit the deciding blow in the seventh. Kevin Preau led off the seventh inning with a single off relief pitcher Zach Sutton. Chase Lambin bunted into a fielder's choice for the first out. Corey Coles doubled to put runners on second and third. Sutton issued an intentional walk to Sneed to load the bases. Shelton muscled a 1-1 change-up over the right field wall to clear the bases.
UCF battled back in the eighth inning. Adam Miller doubled down the right field line. Miller finished the day 2-for-4 with a run scored. Pinch-hitter Jason Graham beat out an infield single to third base to put runners at the corners. Jeremy Frost grounded into a double play scoring Miller, but ending the rally.
Mike Myers was ejected in the seventh inning for arguing balls and strikes after becoming the sixth of seven Golden Knight batters called out on strikes during the game. Myers was also the last UCF player ejected when tossed for the same offense his sophomore year against Stetson.
The Golden Knights look to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon in a 2:00 p.m. start at Tigue Moore Field. Sophomore southpaw Paul Lubrano (0-0, 2.25 ERA) will start for the Golden Knights. The Cajuns have announced they will start a right-hander, most likely Brandt Ray (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
