UCF Falls Short on Ninth Inning Rally, Drops 5-4 Decision to FIU

MIAMI, Fla. -- UCF scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but came up short leaving two runners on in the ninth and 13 total for the game, dropping a 5-4 decision to Florida International.

Daniel Bustamente was the big stick for Florida Internantional going 2-for-4 with a home run, double and two RBI.

UCF mounted the ninth inning comeback with a lead-off single by Clay Timpner. Timpner was 3-for-4 in his freshman debut.

After a Mike Myers strikeout, pinch-hitter Ryan Bear reached on an uncharacteristic error by FIU second baseman Dennis Diaz. Pinch-hitter Nathan Kragt was hit by the first offering from Luis Gazitua to load the bases.

Jeremy Frost broke the shutout with a single up the middle. Back-to-back wild pitches plated two more Golden Knights.

Adam Miller knocked home another run by reaching on an error by first baseman Brad Eldred.

Relief pitcher Carlos Sanchez earned his first save of the season by striking out Dee Brown and inducing Matt Fox to ground out back to the mound.

Michael Baluja was the winning pitcher throwing five shutout innings and recording four strikeouts. Mark Michael took the loss for UCF getting hit for four runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings.

UCF will take on Bethune-Cookman Tuesday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
