Mike Akers is in his first season as assistant coach for the men[apos]s and women[apos]s golf teams at UCF. He will split his time between both programs and will help with all aspects, including coaching, scheduling and recruiting. He acted as head coach of the women[apos]s golf program until the hiring of Emilee Klein late in the fall of 2005, and was the coach of record for three of the team[apos]s four fall events.
Akers came to UCF after serving one year as a volunteer assistant for the women[apos]s golf team at Middle Tennessee. There, he helped the team achieve a top 75 ranking and record its first tournament win.
His previous coaching experience includes an eight-year stint as associate head coach at his alma mater, Fort Hays State in Hays, Kan. He helped elevate that program to one of the best in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. During that same time he served as head professional at Smoky Hill Country Club in Hays, where he was responsible for the daily management of the entire golf operation. He also set the course record at Smoky Hill with a 9-under-par 62.
He is the founder and owner of Precision Valley Golf Center, a full-service golf training site in Hays, that includes indoor and outdoor hitting areas as well as a fully-stocked pro shop.
Akers has ties to Orlando from his time as an assistant pro at Rio Pinar Country Club, where he spent two years helping with the day-to-day operations of the private club.
He earned a bachelor of science degree in exercise science from Fort Hays State, where he was a member of the golf team. He recorded three tournament victories during his collegiate playing career.
