Joey Rodriguez joined the UCF men's basketball staff in September 2012 as the program's assistant video coordinator. A former star point guard at VCU, Rodriguez led the Rams to the 2011 Final Four.
Before joining the UCF staff, Rodriguez played professionally in Puerto Rico and Turkey.
Rodriguez is best known for his impressive play as a senior during the 2011 NCAA Tournament. In leading the 11th-seeded Rams to five tournament victories, he averaged 9.0 points and 7.7 assists in 34.8 minutes per game. He filled up the stat sheet with 17 points and seven assists in the second-round victory over Georgetown and followed that performance with 12 points and 11 assists in the third round versus Purdue. Against Florida State in the Sweet 16, Rodriguez dished out 10 assists. And on the biggest stage - versus Butler in the Final Four - he recorded eight assists.
As a senior, he started all 40 contests for the Rams and averaged 10.4 points and 5.2 assists. Rodriguez finished his time at VCU first in school history with 4,401 career minutes, second with 237 career steals and third with 580 career assists.
Rodriguez starred at Lake Howell High School in nearby Winter Park. He finished as Lake Howell's all-time leader in assists and also helped the Silverhawks to a 31-3 mark as a senior when he earned all-state first team honors.
