H.R. Powell joined the UCF sports performance department in June 2024 and primarily works with the baseball, volleyball and men's golf teams.
Powell arrived in Orlando after spending nearly a decade at the University of Miami as both a certified athletic trainer and strength and conditioning coach. During his tenure with the Hurricanes, he helped the baseball team reach five post-season appearances, including the College World Series in 2016. He also worked with the women’s tennis program — which produced the 2022 NCAA Doubles Championship Runner Up and 2021 NCAA Singles Championship Runner Up — and served as an adjunct professor for the university’s athletic training program from 2018-24.
A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and USA Weightlifting Level 1 Certified Coach, Powell graduated from Montclair State with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training in 2013. He later earned his master’s degree in exercise science from Montclair State in 2016.
Before arriving in Coral Gables, Powell spent two seasons as the head athletic trainer for the six-time Atlantic League champion Somerset Patriots baseball team. In his final season with the team, the Patriots won the league championship.
Powell has also spent time working with the baseball programs at Ramapo College (N.J.) and Montclair State (N.J.).
A native of Branchburg, N.J., Powell and his wife, Sydney, have a son, Asher.
