Dr. Abhishek Kannan is a fellowship-trained Orthopedic sports medicine surgeon with the Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute. He has specialty training in shoulder replacement and hip preservation. Dr. Kannan is team physician for University of Central Florida (UCF) Athletics. He treats athletes and non-athletes who suffer from injuries affecting their muscles, bones, joints, ligaments and tendons. He often performs:
- Hip arthroscopy for treatment of femoroacetabular impingement, hip labral repair
- Knee arthroscopy for ligament repair and reconstruction, meniscus repair, cartilage restoration
- Shoulder arthroscopy for rotator cuff repair, shoulder stabilization, biceps surgery
- Shoulder replacement
- Fracture Repair of the knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist, clavicle
Dr. Kannan uses a patient-specific approach to find the optimal treatment plan, which could range from activity modifications and physical therapy to surgical repair or reconstruction. His decision-making process integrates clinical evaluation, evidence-based treatment protocols and sports-specific rehabilitation to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
Dr. Kannan’s Training
Dr. Kannan earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa. He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at Northwestern University McGaw Medical Center in Chicago. His fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine and shoulder surgery was completed at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Kannan is a member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
He has contributed to multiple medical journals, including The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. He has published peer-reviewed articles on topics related to bone healing, arthroscopic hip preservation, and minimally invasive surgical techniques related to the hip, shoulder, and knee.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with family, playing tennis and personal fitness.
