ORLANDO - UCF men’s tennis opened the season at UTSA National Campus this past weekend to host the annual Bedford Cup, where Clement Lemire dominated over four Florida schools to claim the singles title.
To begin his second season with the Knights, Lemire defeated five Sunshine State players to secure the win in the singles draw. In his first match, Lemire bested FSU’s Elias Sumann with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8). In his next match against Jose David Segovia Perez from FAU, the junior swept the final 16 bout, 6-2, 6-2.
Lemire’s win over Segovia Perez led him to the quarterfinals, where he topped Florida’s Ty Host (6-3, 6-4) to move on to the semi-finals against Host’s teammate, Alaa Trifi (6-7, 6-4 [10-8]). In the final, Guglielmo Verdese tried to stand in the way of Lemire, but the Bull was no match for him as the contest ended 6-4 and 6-2, crowning Lemire as the singles champion in the process.
Along with Lemire, Kai-Luca Ampaw made it to the quarterfinals in his bracket, defeating players from FAU (6-1, 6-4) and FGCU (6-2, 6-1).
Ampaw also competed with Nicolas Oliveira in the doubles tournament, where the pair beat USF (7-6) to bring them to the semifinals.
