Punter Atticus Bertrams Named to Ray's 8

ORLANDO – UCF football punter Atticus Bertrams has been named to the Ray Guy Award Ray’s 8, a weekly honor recognizing the top punters in the game.

Pinning No. 2 BYU inside the 20 with half his punts on Saturday, Bertrams booted four punts in the victory, averaging 48.0 yards per punt. The Cougars didn’t score on an ensuing drive after three of four Bertrams punts.

His first punt of Saturday’s win was his longest, traveling 55 yards out of bounds to the BYU 16-yard line. The next punt for Bertrams went even deeper, flying to the 12-yard line for a 44-yard punt in the air. With a holding call on the return, BYU was backed up to the eight-yard line and went three-and-out. His final punt of the night nearly reached inside the 20 as well, sailing 47 yards to the BYU 24-yard line.

Bertrams ranks 10th in punting in the FBS, averaging 46.4 yards per punt. That clip ranks second in the Big 12 Conference, sitting only behind Baylor’s punter who averages 50.5 yards per punt. That means the two top punters in the league will square off on national television when UCF hosts Baylor Friday night.

The Sydney, Australia native is chasing a UCF legend in the record books. Former Knight Matt prater holds UCF’s record for average punt distance in a season at 47.9. If the season ended today, Bertrams would finish second in average yards per punt for a single season.
