Men's Soccer Falls at Coastal Carolina, 2-1

by Ryan Ladika

CONWAY, S.C. – Though it received a late goal by redshirt junior forward Drew Hansen, the UCF men’s soccer team fell in its Friday evening road matchup at Coastal Carolina, 2-1.

The loss represented UCF’s (5-3-3, 1-2-1 Sun Belt) second of the Sun Belt Conference slate and third of the season overall, while the Chanticleers improved to 3-4-4 and 1-1-2 in league play.

UCF held the offensive edge over Coastal Carolina throughout the evening, outshooting the Chanticleers by a 14-3 margin on the night, but the Knights could not solve the home eleven’s defensive scheme to build upon its 4-0 win home win over the Marshall Thundering Herd Oct. 3.

Coastal Carolina took the contest’s first lead late in the first half on a UCF own goal in the 37th minute of action, and added to its advantage in the opening minute of the second half.

The Chanticleers would maintain their 2-0 edge throughout most of the final 45 minutes of play, until senior defender Takahiro Fujita drew a penalty shot for the Black and Gold in the 77th minute when he was fouled inside the 18-yard box.

Hansen was selected to try to break up the shutout for his team, and he cashed in with a shot into the right side of the goalmouth to net his team-leading fifth goal of the season and his first career penalty kick goal.

The Knights were unable to find the equalizer, though, and dropped a matchup to the Chanticleers for the first time as a member of the Sun Belt Conference.
