Men's Soccer Claims Season-Opening 1-0 Win Over Boston U.

ORLANDO – The way the saying goes, defense wins championships.

The UCF men’s soccer team is intimately familiar, as the squad just months ago captured the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Tournament title conceding just three goals in three games, including one postseason clean sheet.

No championships were clinched in the program’s season-opening 1-0 home triumph over Boston U. Thursday evening, but defense certainly won the match for the Black and Gold.

“It was a really good game. It was an excellent test, Boston U. came at us and created, in their pressing, some really difficult moments for us. I was happy to see, especially in that first half, how we dealt with it. It was a highly-competitive game, and good to see us tested in a regular-season game. We have to learn while we’re winning.”

The Knights, led by their back line, stymied the Terriers in claiming the first win in program history over Boston U., permitting just six total shot attempts and none on goal.

Their offense was also provided, in keeping with the theme of the evening, by their defense.

Senior transfer defender Takahiro Fujita, tabbed the Sun Belt’s 2026 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, cleaned up a mishandled redirection attempt by the Terrier goalkeeper in the second half and gave his new team its first goal and lead of the new season.

“I was always a huge fan of ‘Taka’ when he was at Marshall, and I thought he was one of, if not the, best players in the country. When he came in the portal, I was very excited to see if he would want to come here. I feel very fortunate that he found UCF to be a place he wanted to be.”

The contest represented UCF’s first shutout win in a season-opener since the 2015 Knights bested Florida Atlantic at home, 5-0, and the Black and Gold also improved to 3-1-0 in their last four season-openers dating back to the program’s 2-1 road victory over the then-No. 9 Clemson Tigers Aug. 24, 2023.

The six shot attempts yielded by the Knights represented the fewest allowed in a match since UCF held Coastal Carolina to just six Oct. 31, 2025, and the Black and Gold allowed no shots on target in a match for the first time since the squad shut out Georgia Southern in Orlando, 2-0, Oct. 7, 2023.

After playing to a scoreless stalemate through the first 45 minutes, UCF finally broke through soon after the halftime break.

Senior midfielder Kenn Muendo brought the ball into the 18-yard box on the near side and shot a crossing attempt back toward the middle.

The pass missed wide, but newcoming midfielder Alex Partera was there to secure the ball on the far side. After driving in a few paces, he laced a passing attempt of his own back toward the center of the box that was punched away by Boston U. goalkeeper Ben Alexander.

The redirection trickled right out to Fujita just above the penalty area, whose lone shot attempt of the night found its way in the open upper right corner of the goalmouth.

Takahiro Fujita scores the lone goal of the evening in the 57th minute.

"I’m so happy for him," said teammate and fellow defender Gwendal Degorce. "He’s been amazing since he got here in the spring, and it’s the result of all the hard work he’s put in and the amazing player that he is."
