Women's Hoops Signs Illinois State Transfer Kya Hurt

ORLANDO - Joining an exciting haul of guards that first-year head coach Gabe Lazo has brought to Orlando, the UCF women’s basketball team officially signed Northern Illinois transfer Kya Hurt to the 2026-27 roster.

The freshman sensation was a key figure for the Redbirds during her first collegiate campaign, averaging 7.7 points per game across over 20 minutes of action per game. An efficient shooter, Hurt boasted an impressive 42/37/74 split, downing 111 of her 262 field-goal attempts.

From beyond the arc, Hurt connected on 23 of her 63 attempts, highlighted by a career-high four against Indiana State on December 29. On the defensive end, Hurt tallied just under a steal per game and averaged two rebounds a contest.

A visionary on the court, the future Knight boasted 2.3 assists per game, reaching three or more in 13 total games. Against Valparaiso, Hurt dished out a career-high seven assists, as her assists average ranked third on the Redbirds. 

Hurt’s three-level scoring ability secured her 11 games with 10 or more points, while surpassing 15 or more in four contests. Against Indiana State, Hurt authored a career-high 26 points on nine field goals, along with four three-pointers.

During Illinois State's run to the Women's NIT Championship, Hurt featured in at least 15 minutes a contest across the five-game run. Overall, the future Knight boasted 10 double-digit scoring performance, underlined by a dominant three-game stretch in late December where she scored 18, 12 and 26 points in consecutive matchups.

At the high school level, Hurt laced up for Lawrence North, leading the Wildcats to a 2025 IHSAA Class 4A State title, averaging 12.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game throughout her senior year.
