Hugo Vogel – Sophomore Defender – Lyon, France – FC Basel

Vogel arrives at UCF with professional experience in both France and Switzerland, having developed through the academy of Olympique Lyonnais before continuing his career with FC Basel.

Born in Pierre-Bénite and raised in the Lyon metropolitan area, Vogel began his football journey with Vénissieux before joining Lyon’s academy in 2013. During the 2021–22 campaign, he was one of only three players born in 2004 to feature for Lyon’s reserve side in France’s Championnat National 2, fast-tracking his rise within one of Europe’s most respected development systems.

His professional debut came on Nov. 25, 2021, when he appeared in a 3–1 UEFA Europa League victory over Brøndby, replacing now Chelsea defender Malo Gusto. He later earned a start at right back in Lyon’s group stage finale against Rangers as the club advanced as unbeaten group leaders.

Following his time in Lyon, Vogel signed a four-year contract with FC Basel in July 2022. He debuted in the Swiss Cup during the 2022–23 season and made four senior appearances in the Swiss Super League. He also became a regular contributor for Basel II in the Swiss Promotion League, totaling 51 appearances and four goals between 2022 and 2025.

On the international stage, Vogel represented France at the U16 and U18 levels. He was also part of Lyon’s U19 squad that captured the 2021–22 Coupe Gambardella title, one of France’s premier youth competitions.

Standing at 5-foot-11, he brings a European tactical foundation, professional match experience, and positional flexibility to the Knights’ back line.

Vogel, who intends to major in communications at UCF, cited Orlando's quality of life and the presence of fellow French teammates as key factors in his decision to join the Knights.
